Bueng Kan, also known as Bung Kan is the newest province out of the 76 provinces in Thailand, having been formed in 2011 when it was split from the province of Nong Khai. Bueng Kan is located in the far north east of Thailand bordering Laos to the north with the Mekong river running between the two countries. It is a mountainous and sparsely populated province, with particular highlights being its beautiful waterfalls (namtok) as well as stunning mountain side temples, including Wat Phu Tok, which translates as "Temple of Table Mountain". It's a peaceful and serene "Wat", popular for meditation after a long climb up the many steps to the summit.
